Good Science Fair Project: Eggs
This Science Fair Project is actually more about detergents than eggs. This is a good science fair project for someone interested in chemistry. We are going to try and find out if there really is a difference between detergents with enzymes and detergents that does not contain enzymes.

In order for stains to be removed from clothes during the washing process, the long strings protein molecules needs to be ”cut“ into smaller pieces so they can be washed away. The reason these stains appear is because the long protein molecule strings wraps itself around the fibers of the cloth. This is a fun science fair project that is very easy to do. You have to give yourself enough time though, because as all good science fair projects it needs time to be completed. While you are doing the science fair project, it might be a good idea to read up on the subject so you can give a good explanation of the results of your project. For more on good science fair projects I can recommend an e-book such as Science Fair Projects Made Easy. With this e-book you’ll know exactly what you need to do for a good Science Fair Project.

This is what you will need for this science fair project:
- 2 1-Quart glass jars
- Masking tape
- Water
- Powdered laundry detergent with enzymes
- Powdered laundry detergent without Enzymes
- Marking pen
- 2 Peeled, hardboiled eggs
- A large spoon
- A magnifying glass
This is what you need to do:
- First of all you need to fill the jars about ¾ full with tap water.
- Now you have to ad 1 tablespoon of the detergent without enzymes to the one jar and stir it so the detergent dissolves completely in the water.
- Now repeat this in the second jar with the detergent that has enzymes.
- Mark the jars with your marking pen so you cannot get mixed up with the two.
- The jar with the detergent without enzymes you mark ”ordinary“ and the one with the enzymes you mark ”biological“
- Now you carefully place one egg in each of the jars.
- This is where the waiting starts, place the jars in a warm area where they are safe and will not be interfered with.
- For the next 14 days you have to make observations of what you see happening to the eggs. Lift the eggs out of the bottles and carefully examine them with your magnifying glass.
- Make careful notes of what you see happening to the eggs.
- Each day you need to replace the fluids in the jars with fresh solution of the appropriate mixture of water and laundry detergent.
- Do not get mixed up with the two!
- Write down the results carefully.
- What do you see happening to the surface of the eggs?
- Why do you think this is happening? (Remember the long strings of protein we talked about earlier)
- How do you explain it scientifically? (Proteins are large molecules composed of chains of smaller molecules and each molecule wraps itself around the fibers of the cloth. The enzymes in the detergent cut through the long strands of proteins and breaks them up without damaging the cloth fibers, now the molecules can slip through and be washed away. Try and find out where the enzymes come from. Hint: think bacteria.)
If you want to take this science fair project further, you can do the following:
- To find out if temperature plays any role in the process, repeat the experiment 2 times. First by using cold water and keeping it in the refrigerator and secondly by using warm water and replacing the jars with thermos bottles.
- You can also try and find out if a different strength solution makes a difference.
- Repeat the experiment twice, once using only a teaspoon of detergent and the second time using 3 tablespoon of detergent.
Remember, as always with a good science fair project, make very meticulous notes as you go.
