Science Fair Project On Air (The Burning Candle One)
Easy Science Fair Project: Duplication of John Mayow’s (1641-1679) Experiment On Showing That Burning Consumes A Substance In Air
Easy Science Fair Projects: Air as the supporter and protector

In this easy science fair project we are going to replicate John’s Mayow’s experiment that shows that burning consumes a substance in the air. What substance do you think it is? Why do you think it is that substance? The answering of all these questions before you start is meant to give you an idea of how you arrive at a hypothesis.
When doing science fair projects it is essential that you follow the proper scientific method. If you want to make very sure that you do a winning science fair project I highly recommend that you get an excellent science fair project e-book. One I think that will really help you is “Super Science Fair Projects E-Book”
Now on to the project
What you are going to need:
- A 1-pint glass jar
- Water
- A cereal bowl
- Modeling clay
- A candle that is about half as tall as the jar you are going to use
- Matches (be careful of burning, for little kids an adult should assist in lighting the candle)
- Red food coloring
This is what you need to do:
- With the modeling clay secure the candle on the bottom of your cereal bowl so that it stands upright.
- Now you have to fill the bowl with water until it is about ¾ full.
- To make your observations easier add a few drops of red (or any color) food coloring the water until it is a very deep color.
- Whilst being very careful, and with competent adult supervision, light your candle
- Quickly lower the upside down jar over the burning candle and let it stand at the bottom of the cereal bowl. Your burning candle is now fully covered.
- Now is the time to start making notes. (For help on scientific method I recommend an e-book such as Super Science Fair Projects E-Book)
- Why does the candle go out after a while?
- What happens to the water level in the jar?
- Why does it happen?
- Do you think the size of the jar affects the results of this experiment? To find out repeat your experiment two times, once with a smaller jar and once with a bigger jar.
- Make meticulous notes of your findings. (Super Science Fair Projects E-Book can help!)
- Now we want to find out if the shape of the jar has any effect on the results of this experiment. Do you think it has?
- To find out repeat the experiment using a slender candle that can fit into neck of a glass soda bottle.
- Repeat the experiment twice.
- For the first time use a glass soda bottle and for the second time use the same slender candle in a large mouthed glass bottle.
- Does it make any difference to the results?
- Make notes and even take photos of your whole experiment to use in your display. (For help with a good display, make use of an e-book such as Super Science Fair Projects E-book)
- Remember you have to take the photos at the beginning, during and after your experiment has been concluded.
- Now go back to your hypothesis. Were you right? If you were, why? If you were not why?
- What have you learned from this experiment?
- How can it be of any practical use in everyday life?
I hope you have enjoyed this Easy Science Fair Projects.
