Easy Science Fair Project: Demonstrating Why Ships Do Not Capsize
Looking at a ship, it seems to be top heavy. You may well ask the question as to why the ship does not capsize. For this Science Fair Project we are going to build a model of a catamaran to demonstrate how the double hull makes it even more stable.
Before we start, we need to think about this a little. Why do you think a ship does not capsize? Why do you think a catamaran is even more stable than a ship with only one hull? You’ll have to read up a little on the resistance of the water.
|
When you think you know a little more you can write your hypothesis, that is what you think will happen to your catamaran. For help on scientific method, how to do a proper science experiment, what the judges are looking for, how to do your display and much more I recommend that you get yourself a good Science Fair projects E-book such as 101 Easy Science Projects that are suitable for grades k-12.
Now we are ready to start building our catamaran.
This is what you’ll need:
- A small plastic bottle
- A pair of scissors
- Some garden cane
- A few elastic bands
- A tank or a bowl of water to serve as you river, dam or ocean
- Small items such as wooden blocks to serve as cargo
|
|
This is what you need to do:
- You have to remove the top from your plastic bottle and then you have to carefully cut it in half lengthwise with your scissors.
- Make sure that this leaves you with two identical shapes to serve as the two hulls of your catamaran.
- Now you have to carefully lay the two halves next to each other on your work surface.
- Take your garden cane and cut it into two medium sized canes.
- Lay these two pieces of garden cane on top of you two ”hulls“
- Secure these two pieces of garden cane to your hulls with your elastic bands.
- Place your completed catamaran in your bowl of water.
- Now is the time to find our how stable your catamaran is.
- Start loading cargo onto your catamaran.
- What is happening?
- Is the cargo making your catamaran capsize?
- Try loading your cargo unevenly and see what happens.
- Can you make your catamaran capsize?
- What do you think is the reason for your catamaran not capsizing?
- Explain and make careful notes.
- How are you going to demonstrate this at the Science Fair?
- What is your display going to look like?
As you can see, doing the project, in this case making your catamaran is only a very small part of your whole project. For help on how to plan and execute your display, how to keep your records and more I strongly recommend that you get yourself a good Science Fair Project E-Book such as 101 Easy Science Projects. This e-book is suitable for grades k-12 and it will help you do a winning Science Fair Project. Have a look.
