Do Earthworms Help Plants to Grow? A Science Fair Project to Give You the Answer
This Science Fair Projects is one of our Science Fair Projects that is ideal for kids that love nature and gardening.
If you have ever played in the dirt, you probably noticed that there are a lot of earthworms in it. What is the purpose of these earthworms? The question that you are going to answer in this science fair project (which could be done by students in grades three through six) is whether or not earthworms affect the growth rate in plants.
Before starting science fair projects, it is necessary to write a hypothesis. This is your ‘educated guess’, which tells everyone what you think is going to happen. It really doesn’t matter if your hypothesis is right or wrong. (If you want to find our more about writing your hypothesis, I strongly recommend "Science Fair Projects Made Easy" or "Super Science Fair Projects" as both will give you excellent guidance on your whole project)

The materials that you will need for this science fair project project are: 6 (6 inch) pots, potting soil, 18 seeds and 6 earth worms. You can get earthworms by digging up some in your yard, or you can buy them in some of the home garden stores or fishing stores.
The first step is to plant the seeds, putting three seeds in each pot, evenly spaced. Then, add 2 of the earthworms to three of the pots. Three pots are not going to get any earthworms at all. Make sure to water the pots the same amount of water at the same intervals. Also, make sure that each pot has the same access to heat and light to give the seeds the same advantages.
After waiting for the seeds to sprout, you are going to start measuring their growth. Record your results weekly. You should plan for this science fair project to last about four to six weeks to get the best results. When writing down the results, make sure to write down the height of each plant.

When the project is finished, you are going to need to analyze your results. Make sure to take the average plant growth for the pots that had earthworms in them and those that didn’t have earthworms in them.
With all science fair projects you need to make a display. To show your results, you may want to make a chart, which will show the science fair judges the results in an instant.
If you feel you need more help with the best way to impress the judges with your display, you may want to have a look at "Super Science Fair Projects" or "Science Fair Projects Made Easy" as both have very easy and thorough descriptions on how to do your project.
So, was your hypothesis right? Did you guess that the pots that had earthworms were going to affect the growth rate of plants in a positive direction? When writing your science fair project report, make sure to tell about what earthworms eat, how they live in the soil and even how they helped to make your plants grow faster. You may also want to mention what you think plant growth would be like if there were no earthworms to help out.
This project is easy, but, it takes time. If you do not have the time and your Science Project is due very shortly or even tomorrow, help is at hand, try "24 Hours Science Projects." The projects are easy to do and use readily available supplies.
Have fun doing science fair projects.
