Science Fair Project On Taste
Elementary Science Fair Project: Sweet Sensations
We know that our tongue is used for tasting, but how do we taste difference flavors at the same time? When we eat sweet and sour chicken, or pour a bag of salty peanuts into a bottle of cola, we can taste two things at the same time: sweet & sour and salty & sweet. The goal of this science fair project is to make a map of the mouth, and is great for students in grades one through three. For more information about Science Fair Projects and propes scientific methos, you may want to have a look at "Super Science Fair Projects"

When performing a science experiment, the scientist always wants to think of a question that he wants to be answered. The question you might want to answer is: how can a tongue experience two different tastes at one time? The five types of taste that people can taste are sweet, salty, bitter, spicy and sour.
For this science fair experiment, you are going to need Q-tips and five water solutions that taste sweet, salty, bitter, spicy, and sour. You should have your parents help you with this. To make the sweet water, you can use about half sugar and half water and mix it around in a cup. You can use salt for the salty solution, coffee for the bitter solution, lemon juice for the sour one and hot sauce for the spicy one. You are also going to need a blindfold, so that the person cannot see which solution you are putting on their tongue.

Now the fun of the science fair project begins! Blindfold the person you are going to do the experiment on, and then dip one of the Q-tips into a taste solution. Ask a person to stick out their tongue, and instruct them to tell you when they taste something, and to tell you what they taste. Slowly rub the Q-tip on their tongue, moving from one side to the other and from front to back. You may have to add more taste solution! When you find out where they tasted something, make sure to write it down. You can make a drawing of their tongue to help you record which areas on the tongue will experience which tastes. Once again, if you feel you need more help with scienctific method, try "Super Science Fair Projects."
Repeat this experiment for as many people as you can find, and put all of your data that you collected together. What did you discover? You should have found out that there are five different areas on the tongue where you can taste each different taste. We can taste sweet and sour at the same time or salty and sweet at the same time because our tongue can pick each of these tastes out on its specific area.
The next time you are eating something with more than one taste, see if you can remember which part of the tongue tastes what!
If you do not have a lot of time left to do your science project, maybe you need to have it done by tomorrow, well there is help at hand! Have a look at "24 Hours Science Project."
