Elementary Science Fair Projects: Sweet or Salty Flowers?
A lot of elementary science fair projects use plants as the basis, but this project is going to use cut flowers instead. Cut flowers are always nice to get. Maybe your mother gets them from your father every year on her birthday or Valentine’s Day. The problem with fresh cut flowers is that they seem to die after a couple of days, and don’t really last all that long. This is one of our elementary science fair projects that can be done by any elementary student in grade 1-6. This Experiment is going to answer the questions on how to keep these flowers alive longer.

For this science fair project, you are going to need 18 flowers (carnations may be the best, because they are inexpensive, and tend to last longer); 9 vases of the same size (you can cut the top off of 2 liter soda bottles if you don’t have enough of the same sized vases); water; salt, sugar and measuring cups.
Label three vases with ”sugar“, three with ”salt“, and three with ”none“. Place about 750 ml of water into each of the 9 vases. Put one tablespoon of sugar into each of the ”sugar“ vases, and one tablespoon of salt into each of the ”salt“ vases. You aren’t going to put anything into the ”none“ vases (except for water). Trim the stems of each flower with scissors, and put two flowers into each of the vases.

What do you think is going to happen? Which group of flowers is going to last the longest? The answer to this question is going to be your hypothesis. Make sure to write it down, along with the reason why you think your particular group will last the longest.
When doing elementary science fair projects, you want to make sure that all of the conditions are the same. Make sure that your fresh cut flowers are put in the same room, with the same exposure to light and heat (which will cause them to die quicker). Make sure to do the experiment with all groups at the same time. If you do the experiment at different times, you may have weather and humidity affecting your results. This is a very important point to remember when doing any science fair project. For more on scientific method you may want to have a look at "101 Easy Science Projects."
Observe the flowers daily, recording which flowers died. What are the results? Which flowers lasted the longest: the sugar flowers, the salty flowers or the plain water flowers? Was your hypothesis right? If you did the experiment correctly, you should have found out that the flowers in the sugar water lasted the longest, and flowers in the salt water died the quickest. Why do you think this is?
