Science Fair Project On Hamsters
Can You Fool a Hamster?

If you like animals and want to become a veterinarian, you may want to try doing a science fair project that uses live animals that are found in a lot of classrooms. If you are using live animals, you may need to get permission from your science teacher, who will review your science fair project to make sure that everything is done safely. This science fair project includes hamsters - so you will need a hamster, a cage and all of the equipment that you need to keep hamsters happy (a wheel for them to run in, food, water, bedding materials, and so on).
The purpose of this science fair project is to discover whether or not you can trick hamsters to think that it is night, when it actually is day. You are going to put the hamster in a room that you can make light or dark at any time. Then you are going to switch day and night. For example, if it is daytime, you are going to shut off all of the lights and make sure the room is very dark. If it is nighttime, you are going to turn on the lights so that the hamster thinks that it is day.
Watch the hamster (you can video record the activities or just check in with the hamster periodically) to see what it does. Make sure to record the time and the activity that the hamster is doing in your science fair notebook (for example: 10 AM -- sleeping; 12 AM -- sleeping; 8 PM – eating; 9 -- PM running). You are going to do this for at least one week. If you are having problems watching the hamsters during the night because you go to sleep so early, you may want to ask your mom or dad to take a couple of observations for you after you go to bed. To help you with all the correct scientific method I can recommend "Science Fair Projects Made Easy" that does what the name says or if you want an e-book that can be used for all the grades I can recommend "101 Easy Science Projects."
So what are your results? Can you trick a hamster into thinking that night is day and day of night? Or did their natural body clocks keep on ticking regardless of whether the room was light or dark? This science fair project is perfect for elementary students in grades 3 to 6 with parental or teacher supervision because not only does it teach them about the life cycle and about animal behavior, it will also help them to learn how to take care of a pet responsibly. Students should make a log of the major activity that the hamster performs. If a student has a digital camera, he or she can take pictures to back up their observations. Enjoy your Science Fair Project!
As Science Fair Projects need to be done correctly using the proper scientific method, I strongly recommend that you get one of the excellent e-books I recommend, and make sure you do the best Science Fair Project possible! Browse them and decide wich one suits your needs the best. Personally I think "101 Easy Science Projects" are great because it has projects suitable for all the grades. On the other hand if your project is due shortly, you may want to consider "24 Hours Science Projects." Then again, "Science Fair Projects Made Easy" and "Super Science Fair Projects" teaches you all the scientific methods and both have lots of help to ensure you do the best project possibe, so, have a look, I know you'll not be dissappointed.
