Science Fair Project On Memory

Middle School Science Fair Project:  ”Let’s Talk about It“

A lot people think that talking about something will help you to remember it.  This science fair project, which is ideal for grades 6-8, uses materials that you can get for free at any hardware store: paint chips.  After looking at a color for five seconds, is it possible to pick out the color you were just looking at after 30 seconds?  Does describing the color help you to remember it or not.

For this science fair project, you will need two groups of people.  One group will look at a paint chip for five seconds and then spend 30 seconds describing the color that they just saw.  The other group will look at the chip and then wait 30 seconds doing nothing.  Both groups will get the same line up of 5 similarly colored paint chips (one of them being the one that they looked at and four similar colors) and asked to pick out the paint chip that they just saw.

The most important step in this science fair project is to choose colors that are very similar.  You aren’t trying to trick the person, but if you choose red, blue, green, white and black, 100% of the people are going to get the experiment right!  When choosing your colors, you may want to choose colors like navy blue, midnight blue, dark blue, and so on.  Using paint chips is really ideal for this project, because there are literally thousands of colors to choose from.

Another key to this project is to ask as many people as you can to take part.  It should only take a couple of minutes for each person to do the experiment, and the more people you have, the better the results will be.

So what are the results?  Does describing a color really help you to remember it better?  Was your hypothesis right?  Your data should show that describing a color does not help you to remember it (and can even cause you to do worse than those who just sat there for thirty seconds). Why?  Because what we see and what we describe are often different.  By talking about it, we often get ourselves to remember something that we didn’t see.

When people say that talking about something will help to solve the problem, they aren’t always right.  This science fair project will show just how true that statement is.
